Digital Literacy Program

Our Digital Literacy Program, is a transformative initiative designed to bridge the digital divide in Liberia and Sierra Leone. In a world where digital skills are increasingly essential for education, employment, and economic growth, less than 5% of high school graduates in these countries possess basic computer skills. This gap severely limits their opportunities and perpetuates cycles of poverty in regions still recovering from the devastating impacts of civil war.

The Challenge

The digital divide in Liberia and Sierra Leone is stark, with many young people lacking access to computers and the internet. Schools often struggle with outdated or nonexistent technology, and families living in extreme poverty cannot afford private computer training. This lack of digital literacy prevents young people from accessing online educational resources, participating in the global economy, and pursuing careers in technology—sectors that are critical for national development.

Our Solution

Our Computer Literacy Program addresses these challenges through a holistic, scalable approach. Our goal is to establish fully equipped computer labs in every high school across Liberia and Sierra Leone, with plans to expand to other African countries. Each lab is designed to be sustainable and impactful, integrating the following key components:

  1. Computer Labs in High Schools: We install state-of-the-art computer labs in high schools, ensuring that students have the tools they need to develop digital literacy. Each lab is equipped with solar panels to provide a reliable power source, even in areas with frequent electricity outages. These labs serve as a hub for digital education, allowing students to access a wealth of online resources and develop critical technology skills.
  2. Policy Advocacy: Beyond providing physical resources, we work with local governments to advocate for policies that support digital education. Our collaboration aims to integrate computer literacy into the national curriculum and ensure that schools receive the necessary support and funding to maintain their labs and continue delivering high-quality education.
  3. Community-Based Training: Recognizing that the benefits of digital literacy extend beyond the classroom, our labs are also accessible to the wider community. After school hours, the labs are open to local residents who wish to learn computer skills, access the internet, or participate in online training programs. This community-based approach ensures that the impact of our program is felt throughout the community, empowering people of all ages to improve their lives through technology.

Impact and Goals

Since its inception, the Computer Literacy Program has successfully established computer labs in multiple high schools, impacting thousands of students and community members. Our pilot labs in Monrovia and Sierra Leone have already transformed the educational experience for students, enabling them to develop skills that are essential for their future success.

Over the next three years, our goal is to establish computer labs in 193 schools across Liberia and Sierra Leone, directly benefiting nearly 290,000 students and community members. By providing these young people with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age, we are not only enhancing their educational opportunities but also contributing to the broader goal of economic development in these post-war regions.

Why It Matters

Investing in digital literacy is more than just providing access to technology; it is about empowering a generation to lift themselves out of poverty and become leaders in their communities. By supporting the Computer Literacy Program, you are helping to create a brighter future for Africa’s youth—one where they can compete in the global job market, contribute to their nation’s development, and break the cycle of poverty for themselves and future generations.
